Make Amish Baked Custard Recipe
Amish Baked Custard Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 cups whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Ground nutmeg, for sprinkling
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Place a large baking dish filled with water on the lower rack of the oven. This will create a water bath to ensure even baking.
2. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is scalding hot. Do not let it boil. Remove from heat and set aside.
3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
4. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Make sure to pour the milk in a steady stream while whisking vigorously.
5. Once the custard mixture is well combined, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or bowl. This will help remove any lumps or impurities.
6. Place individual custard cups or ramekins in a baking dish. Pour the custard mixture evenly into each cup, filling them about 3/4 full.
7. Sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg on top of each custard cup.
8. Carefully place the baking dish with the custard cups into the oven, on the middle rack. Bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
9. Remove the custard cups from the water bath and let them cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until chilled and set.
10. Serve the Amish Baked Custard chilled, either on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.
Enjoy the creamy and delicious Amish Baked Custard!
