Ingredients:
- 1 cup lentils (any variety like masoor dal, moong dal, or toor dal)
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- Water
- Ghee or oil for cooking
Step by Step Guide:
1. Rinse the lentils and rice separately under running water until the water runs clear.
2. In a pressure cooker or large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
4. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chili. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
6. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
7. Add the rinsed lentils and rice to the pot. Stir to coat them with the spices.
8. Add enough water to cover the lentils and rice (about 4 cups). Adjust salt if needed.
9. Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for about 3-4 whistles or cook in a pot until the lentils and rice are cooked through.
10. Once done, let the pressure release naturally before opening the lid.
11. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with a side of yogurt, pickle, or papad.
