Ingredients:
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1/2 cup masoor daal (red lentils)
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- Water
Step by Step Guide:
1. Rinse the basmati rice and masoor daal separately under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 30 minutes.
2. In a large pot, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
3. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
4. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped tomato, and green chili. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
5. Drain the soaked rice and masoor daal and add them to the pot. Stir well to coat them with the spices.
6. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix everything together.
7. Pour in enough water to cover the rice and daal by about an inch. Bring to a boil.
8. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the rice and daal are cooked and the water is absorbed.
9. Once done, fluff the pulao gently with a fork. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
10. Serve hot with raita or your favorite side dish.
